This photograph was taken whilst Churchill was on a visit to the North East of England. Whilst visiting coastal defences near Hartlepool, he was given an explanation of the mechanism of the Thompson submachine gun.
The Thompson submachine gun or āTommy Gunā was popularly associated with mobsters of Prohibition Era America. The Nazis used this photograph and its gangster association to vilify Churchill.
